Q

What is cell division and what are new cells needed for

A

The means of increasing the number of cells in an organism
OR
When the nucleus divides into 2 daughter nuclei, each of which receives exactly the same number of chromosomes present in the original nucleus
Needed for growth and to replace worn out cells (repair)

Q

What are the stages of mitosis

A

1) the genetic material is long and threadlike, chromosomes are replicated forming 2 chromatids which are joined together
2) chromosomes become shorter and the nuclear membrane dissapears
3) chromosomes attached to spindle fibres line up at the equator of the cell
4) chromatids are pulled apart and dragged to the poles of the cell
5) chromosomes become long again and are surrounded by a nuclear membrane
6) cytoplasm divides to produce 2 identical daughter cells

Q

What is the chromosome compliment and why is it important for mitosis to maintain it

A

It keeps the number of chromosomes in cells of a multicellular organism the same
It is important that every cell has a full set of info rotation for growth and development
