The Nephron Flashcards
What is the nephron?
functional unit of the kidney
What are the regions of the nephron?
- renal corpuscle
- renal tubule
- collecting ducts
What is the function of the renal corpuscle?
filters blood
Where is the renal corpuscle located?
in the renal cortex region of the kidney
What are the components of the renal corpuscle?
- glomerulus
- glomerular (bowman’s) capsule
- capsular space
What is the glomerulus?
capillary network
What is the glomerular capsule?
cup-shaped epithelial membrane surrounding glomerulus
What is the capsular space?
glomerulst cavity between glomerulus and bowman’s capsule where filtrate enters
What is the function of the renal tubule?
modifies filtrate to form urine
What are the components of the renal tubule?
- proximal convoluted tubule
- loop of henle
- distal convoluted tubule
Where is the proximal convoluted tubule located?
renal cortex
Where is the loop of henle located?
extends into renal medulla
What are the 2 parts of the loop of henle?
ascending and descending limb of loop of henle
Where is the distal convoluted tubule located?
renal cortex
where do the distal convoluted tubules merge?
collecting ducts
