Physiology of the Nephron Flashcards
Excretion vs. Secretion
Excretion- completely removing material from a living thing
Secretion- moving material from one point to another
What part of the nephron performs filtration?
Renal corpuscle
What part of the nephron performs reabsorption?
renal tubule and conducting duct
What part of the nephron performs secretion?
renal corpuscle and conducting duct
What is filtered in the renal corpuscle?
blood plasma
What does blood plasma become after it is filtered in the renal corpuscle?
filtrate
What is reabsorbed in the proximal distal tubule of the renal tubule?
- H2O
- 100% of glucose, amino acids, lactic acids and water-soluble vitamins
What happens to the filtrate osmolarity in the PCT?
stays the same
What is reabsorbed in the descending limb of loop of henle?
H2O (no solutes)
What happens to the filtrate osmolarity in the descending limb?
increases
What is reabsorbed in the ascending limb of the loop of henle?
solutes: Na+ and Cl- (no H2O)
What happens to the filtrate osmolarity in the ascending limb?
decreases
What is reabsorbed in the distal convoluted tubule?
Na+ and Cl- then H2O by osmosis
What happens to the filtrate osmolarity in the DCT?
stays the same
What is reabsorbed in the late DCT and collecting ducts?
Na+, Cl- and H2O
