Smoking Flashcards
How does nicotine effect the respiratory system?
constricts terminal bronchioles
Does hemoglobin have a greater affinity for O2 or CO2?
CO2
What are symptoms of smoking?
- increased mucus secretion
- destruction of elastic fibers
- reduces mucociliary clearance
What does the destruction of elastic fibers lead to?
emphysema
What is emphysema?
the stretching of elastic fibers in air sacs –> breathlessness
What is mucociliary clearance?
a defense mechanism to protect lungs from pollutants and shit in lungs
What removes particles from lungs during mucociliary clearance?
cilia and goblet cells
Where does the cilia move foreign particles?
moves to oropharynx
What causes “smokers lungs”
paralyzed cilia and debris
What can happen with extensive smoking?
metaplasia
define metaplasia
change in tissue type
What cells change during metaplasia?
pseduostratified ciliated columnar epithelium –> stratified squamous epithelium (no cilia)
