The Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
Musculoskeletal system
Skeleton and the muscles attached to the skeleton
What does the musculoskeletal system do
Support body and in movement
How many bones is in the skeleton
206
Name the 3 types of muscle
-cardiac
-smooth
-skeletal
Smooth muscles
Found in the gut and blood vessels
Cardiac muscles
Found in the heart
Skeletal muscles
Type of muscle attached to the skeleton and involved in movement
Joint
The area where two or more bones connect
Cartilage
Another type of connective tissue
3 main joints
-fibrous
-cartilaginous
-synovial
Fibrous joint
Where bones are fused together usually to create a structure. Immovable joints. I.e. skull
Cartilaginous joint
Have bones connected by relatively flexible cartilage that allows some degree of movement. I.e. the rib cage
Synovial joint
They are flexible and moveable in a range of ways. I.e. hip joint
Main types of bones
-flat bone = sternum
-irregular bone = vertebra
-sesamoid bone = patella
-long bone = femur
-short bones = cuneiforms
The main types of synovial joints
-pivot joint
-saddle joint
-plane joint
-hinge joint
-condyloid joint
-ball and socket joint
