The Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
Involves a series of endocrine glands that secrete hormones into the blood
What is the endocrine system involved in
Regulation of growth and development
Regulation of the reproductive system
Homeostasis- the regulation of the internal environment of the body
Name the components of the endocrine system
Pineal
Hypothalamus
Pituitary gland
Thyroid
Parathyroid
Thymus
Adrenal cortex
Kidney
Pancreas
Testes
Ovary
Uterus
Hypothalamus
Located in the brain
Function is to control the body temperature, water balance and secretion of hormones via the pituitary gland
Pituitary gland
Divided into anterior and posterior parts
Ovaries
Produce the female sex hormones including oestrogen and progesterone which are involved in the regulation of the menstrual cycle
Testes
Production of sperm cells and secretion of the male sex hormones such as testosterone
Pancreas
Thyroxine
Secreted by thyroid
Acts on most body cells to regulate metabolic rate
Cortisol
Secreted adrenal cortex
Gastrin
Secreted by stomach
Acts on stomach
