Renal System Flashcards
The renal system 2 main functions
-excretion or removal from the body of nitrogenous waste in the form of urea
-osmoregulation or regulation of the water balance of the body
Components of the renal system
-kidneys
-bladder
-nephron
-ureter
-urethra
Kidneys
Removes wastes and extra fluid from your body
Nephron
Filters the blood and reabsorbs water and other substances leading to urine production
Ureter
Transports urine from the renal pelvis into the bladder
Urethra
Empties urine from the bladder
Bladder
Collect and store urine until the bladder is emptied through the urethra
Ultrafiltration
The process of which urea is removed from the blood
Bowman’s capsule
fluids from blood in the glomerulus are collected in the Bowmans capsule and further processed along the nephron to form urine
Glomerulus
at the beginning of the nephron is the glomerulus, a network of capillaries that performs the first step of filtering blood using diffusion
Proximal convoluted tubule
the filtrate is passed through the proximal tubule. Loop of Henle and distal tubule. Where water and nutrients are re absorbed producing hyperosmotic urine
