The Microscope Flashcards
How do you prepare a slide?
Take a small sample of the specimen and place it in the middle of a clean microscope slide. Use a pipette to add a drop of water to the sample. Put a clean coverslip on top.
How do you focus the microscope on a slide?
Turn the rough knob to move the objective lens down to just above the slide. Then use the fine focusing knob to adjust the focus until a clear image of the cells is visible.
What is a stain that could be used to see the cells more clearly?
Iodine.
What is the formula to find the total magnification?
Eyepiece lens magnification x objective lens magnification.
Why is there a mirror below the microscope?
The mirror reflects light, allowing the observer to see the specimen more clearly, as light is needed for the microscope to work well.
What is one safety precaution when using a microscope?
Don’t reflect direct sunlight into the microscope as it could damage your eyes.
What are the six main parts of a microscope?
- Eyepiece lens
- Objective lens
- Stage
- Mirror
- Fine focusing knob
- Rough focusing knob
