What is a drug?
A drug is any substance that affects the way the body works.
What does drugs affect?

What are the 2 types of drugs?
Legal and Illegal
What are examples of legal drugs?
Aspirin, Caffeine or Antibiotics
What are examples of illegal drugs?
Cannabis, Speed, or Ecstasy
What is alcohol?
Alcohol is a poison which affects the brain and liver leading to various health problems, like cirrhosis (liver disease).
It is extremely addictive, impairs judgement, and can lead to accidents.
What does alcohol decrease?
Alcohol is a depressant, meaning it decreases the brain’s activity and slows down responses.
Because it is a depressant, it’s illegal to buy under the age of 18.
What are recreational drugs?
Recreational drugs are drugs used for enjoyment rather than as medicine. They can have serious negative effects on your health.
What are medicinal drugs?
Medicinal drugs are drugs that are intended to treat, prevent or diagnose a disease, or to restore, correct or modify physiological functions.
What are cigarettes made from?
Finely cut and dried tobacco leaves.
What is tobacco made from?
Tobacco is made from the leaves of the tobacco plant, which contains small amounts of nicotine.
What happens when tobacco smoke is inhaled?
The nicotine quickly enters the bloodstream and has a stimulating effect on the nervous system.
What does nicotine do?
It affects the central nervous system by increasing the heart rate and narrowing the blood vessels, causing high blood pressure.
What is tar?
A sticky brown substance that consists of tiny particles and is formed when tobacco smoke condesnses.
What does tar do?
Tar paralyzes tiny hairs in the airways called cilia, which stops them removing mucus easily.
