Respiration Flashcards
What is Respiration?
The process of releasing energy from glucose.
Where could the energy released in respiration be used?
Building proteins, muscle contraction and keeping warm.
What is aerobic respiration and where does it take place?
Aerobic respiration is respiration using oxygen. It takes place in the mitochondria.
What is the word and symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration is respiration without oxygen.
Why is anaerobic less efficient than aerobic respiration?
Because anaerobic respiration releases less energy.
When would anaerobic respiration occur?
When cells can’t get enough oxygen e.g. when exercising.
What is the word and symbol equation for anaerobic respiration in humans?
Glucose → Lactic Acid
C6 H12 O6 → 2C3 H6 O3
What is the word and symbol equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast?
Glucose → Carbon Dioxide + Ethanol
C6 H12 O6 ⟶ 2C2 H5 O H + 2CO2
What is fermentation?
Fermentation is when anaerobic respiration produces ethanol. It is the process used to make beer.
What is asthma?
Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties.
What makes the lungs of individuals with asthma more sensitive to certain things?
If you have asthma, you have lungs that are more sensitive to certain things like pet hair or dust or smoke.
What is a person known as if they have asthma?
An asthmatic
What happens if an asthmatic breathes into dust or smoke?
If an asthmatic does breathe into dust or smoke, the airway in the respiratory system becomes narrower (this occurs because the muscles around the bronchioles contract).
Why does an asthma attack occur?
An asthma attack occurs because the lining of this airway becomes inflamed and fluid builds up.
