The meninges and cerebrospinal fluid Flashcards
What is the scientific term for the skull bones?
The cranium
What is between the brain and the cranium?
Three layers known as the meninges
What are the names of the meninges?
- Dura mater
- Arachnoid mater
- Pia mater
What are the features of the dura mater?
- very thick fibrous protective layer lining the cranial bones
- comprised of two layers closely adherent to eachother
What is the arachnoid mater?
A thin layer on the inner surface of the dura mater
What is below the arachnoid mater?
The sub-arachnoid space
What is in the arachnoid space?
- thin collagen filaments extending between the aracnoid mater and pia mater
- cerebrospinal fluid
What is CSF?
cerebrospinal fluid
What is the pia mater?
thin layer in direct contact with brain and spinal cord which closely follows the contours of most of the brain’s sulci and gyri
What is special about the pia mater?
It is vascularised - blood vessels are carried to and from the brain in this layer
What are the functions of CSF?
- cushion and protect the brain and spinal cord (brain has reduced weight because is floating)
- diffusion of nutrients into the brain and waste out of the brain
- used as an indicator of CO2 levels
How can CSF be removed?
with a spinal tap
Where is CSF made?
by the choroid plexus in the ventricles of the brain
What are the brain’s ventricles?
spaces or chambers in the brain. There are 2 lateral ventricles (R + L), one ‘third’ ventricle, and one ‘fourth’ ventricle
Where is CSF reabsorbed?
Back into the cardiovascular system in the venous system
