ANS and Limbic system Flashcards
What kind of neurons does the ANS use?
Motor (efferent) neurons
What are the branches of the ANS?
- sympathetic division
- parasympathetic division
What kind of control does the ANS provide?
involuntary
What does the ANS innervate?
- cardiac muscle
- smooth muscle
- various endocrine and exocrine glands
What homeostatic processes does the ANS regulate?
- bp, heart rate
- airway diameter
- urinary bladder contraction
- focusing and dilation of eye
- thermoregulation
- sectretion of saliva, tears, sweat
- sexual function
- adrenal glands
Where in the body does the sympathetic branch extend to?
virtually all parts of the body
Where in the body does the parasympathetic branch extend to?
more localised to certain organs and glands
What are ganglions?
The points where there are a group of synapses between neurons carrying ANS motor info to spinal cord.
There is always a pre ganglionic and post ganglionic neuron in ANS
What are the differences between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches?
- location
- length of pre- and post-ganglionic neurons
- type of neurotransmitter
How does location differ between sympathetic and parasympathetic branches?
- sympathetic nerves emerge alongside T1-12 and L1-3 spinal nerves and reach all parts of the body
- parasympathetic nerves emerge with cranial nerves 3, 7, 9, 10, and the sacral spinal nerves
How does the length of pre- and post-ganglionic neurons differ in sympathetic and parasympathetic branches?
- sympathetic - short pre, long post
- parasympathetic - long pre, short post
How does the type of neurotransmitter differ in sympathetic and parasympathetic branches?
- sympathetic - pre-ganglionic synapse uses acetlycholine, post (at target) uses noradrenaline
- parasympathetic - pre and post use acetylcholine
What effect does the sympathetic nervous system have on the cardiovascular system?
- increase heart rate
- dilate blood vessels in muscle
- constricts blood vessels in skin and GI tract
What effect does the parasympathetic system have on the cardiovascular system?
Decreases heart rate
What effect does the sympathetic branch have on the respiratory system?
- dilates bronchial tree and pulmonary blood vessels to increase gaseous exchange
- results in panting breath
