How is the first server decided?

A

The umpire will toss a coin and say the result and who is the first server and who will start at which end

How do they warm up?

A

Players warm up on the side they are due to serve on
At the end of the warm up the umpire calls time
All the balls go to the servers end once the warm up is finished

What is the minimum requirement to win a set?

A

Need to win 6 games being clear by 2
The exception is a tie break when 6 games all and counts as one game 7-6
But on last set there is no tie break

How many sets must a gentlemen’s doubles and singles win ?

A

It’s best of 5 sets

But if they win 3 set they have won cause they don’t need to play the other 2 sets cause they would have won

A

What happens if a match goes to a final set?

A

An advantage set is played set and match continues until they have won at least 6 games 2 clear
there is no tie break the set continues until they have won

When do players switch ends?

A

When the total number of games played in a set is odd eg every 1,3,5,7,9 games
But players do not sit down after 1 game is played

A

The players do not switch ends they remain at the same end eg 3

When do players serve?

A

They take it in turns to serve
They can’t serve consecutive games
So you need to ensure they get balls when needed

What is the odds and even rule?

A

When the total number of games played is odd the balls remain at the same end ( the player change ends and switch serve) and balls do not get transferred
When the total number of games played is even the balls get transferred to the other end as players stay put

When do players sit ?

A

At the end of a set
When the total number of games played is odd but not on the first game when they switch sides but don’t rest 3,5,7,9 etc

How do you know which end the players will be at for the start of the next set?

A

Applying the odds and even rules
If the total number of games played in the last set is odd then they will change ends for the start of a new set and the balls will stay where they are
If the total number of games played in the last set is even the players will go to the same ends they were just at and the balls will change

What is straight sets?

A

When you win a match playing the minimum amount of sets
Men’s doubles and singles it’s 3 sets (best of 5)
Women’s doubles and singles it’s 2 sets (best of 3)
