what will happen when play is suspended?

A

Play can be suspended for a variety of reasons, the most common one being rain
The umpire will call ‘Ladies and Gentemen, play is suspended’

A

The two most important things are to get off court quickly and to ensure the match balls are kept safe

A

LB1 and RB1 should sprint directly to the umpire’s chair. LB1 should collect the ball barrel en route

A

LB2 and RB2 should sprint diagonally across the back of the court and then in to the umpire’s chair
Collect any balls close enough en route if possible (remember, the covers come across very quickly!)

Centres should sprint across to the umpire’s chair, if not already there
Then get the tins from under the umpire’s chair, have them open ready and ensure the match balls go in these

A

The umpire will hand the warm-up tins (containing six balls) to the centres. Roll these out the same way as at the start of the match
If the umpire hands over the match balls at the same time, place these by the ball barrel in view of the captain

A

Listen to the umpire during the warm up, who will announce the current score and who is serving

A

The players will then be allowed a period of time to warm up, the length of which is determined by how long they have been off the court.

A

The umpire will call in the warm up balls. Roll them in as if it was a ball change but put the warm up balls back into the warm up tins and put these into the old ball bag (to the left of the umpire’s chair)

what happens when the warm up balls have been put away?

A

When the warm up balls have been put away, the match balls can be distributed. This is the same procedure as a normal ball change. The match balls will be beside the ball barrel (or the umpire may have them)

what then happens to the match balls on resumption of play?

A

Roll the match balls out as if it was a ball change, with the appropriate centre collecting the empty tins and placing them under and to the left of the umpire’s chair
