whats the first step of marching onto court?
Line up by the umpire’s chair as previously shown
LB2 and RB2 nod at each other (ensure you are level with the front of the umpire’s chair) and take one pace forward, pivot (left or right as appropriate) and take another small step forward. Then LB1 and RB1 then take two paces forward and pivot (left or right as appropriate) to end up behind LB2 and RB2 respectively
whats the next step of marching onto court?
LC and RC will have closed the gap by taking two small paces forward, ending up in line with the front of the umpire’s chair (where LB2 and RB2 started)
whats the fourth step?
LB1 should touch LB2’s right elbow to initiate the march and RB1 does the same to RB2. Left foot first, then right, left, right and continue. This should happen as soon as you are in position (touch and go)
whats the final step?
Bases continue marching until they arrive at their positions at the back of the court. LB2 and RB2 should glance across occasionally at each other to ensure they arrive at the same time. You should glance using your eyes only, with minimal movement of your head. Once the bases initiate the march, centres follow on until they reach their position just beyond the players chairs and pivot to face outwards, away from the court
where do bases and centres end up?
Bases stand at the back of the court but outside the tramlines (in line with the net post) and look straight ahead
Centres are outside the players’ chairs but in line with the net post
what is marching always?
The lines of travel when marching are always parallel to the court and straight
Remember, marching should always be brisk, smart and purposeful
