Q

Explain deamination in the liver

A

1) amino group (NH2) in amino acid is removed
2) once removed,the NH2 is converted to ammonia (NH4)
3) its then converted to urea(as less toxic), an eliminated in urine (by adding energy and CO2 to make urea and water)
4) remaining part of amino acid(primarily hydrogen + oxygen)= converted to carbohydrate, which is readily broken down by cells to release energy, water and carbon dioxide

Q

What happens to the remainder of the amino acid after the amino group is removed

A

As made of carbon and hydrogen, turned into a carbohydrate that can be readily broken down by cells to release energy carbon dioxide and water
