Absorption in the Small Intestine Flashcards
Explain the final products of the three main components of food
carbohydrates> sugar (mono)
proteins > amino acids
lipids > fatty acids + glycerol
What happens to the nutrients once they are in their final brake down
absorbed through ilium , intestinal wall, into blood or lymph
Does the absorption occur with active or passive transport
both
How is the small intestine suited for its function of absorption (5)
1) contin. flow of blood and food= concentration main.
2) capillaries close to surface= easy diffusion
3) lacteals present= diffusion of large molec.
4) villi + micro villi= SA
5) length of intestine + villi = slow progression of food
What substances are absorbed into the bloodstream
sugars and amino acids vitamins and minerals
What substances are absorbed into the lacteals
fatty acids and glycerol, larger molecules
What happens once absorbed into blood vessels
1) carried to liver via hepatic portal vein
2) the liver - converts glocose to glycogen, amino acids to proteins, stores vitamins
3) whats left = assimunation
Define assimunation
movement of digested materials into cells
What happens once absorbed into lacteals
1) transported to lymph system
2) eventually emptied into blood
What can the body not breakdown
fibre
What substances don’t need to be broken down and why
vitamins, minerals, water, already small enough
