Components of Blood Flashcards
Name the two parts blood is composed of?
plasma and formed elements
which out of plasma and formed elements is the liquid part?
plasma
What is plasma made of?
water and dissolved substances
Name the six dissolved substances in plasma
hormones, nutrients(glucose), ions(Na+, K-), gases, waste products(urea), proteins(fibrinogen)
Where are formed elements found in the blood
suspended in the plasma
What are formed elements?
collection of cells and cell fragments
Name the three types of formed elements
erthyrocytes, leucocytes, thrombocytes
Where are all three formed elements made>?
red bone marrow
Name the three types of leucocytes
granulocytes, monocytes, lymphocytes
What is the function of erythrocytes?
Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide to and from cells (binds to hemoglobin)
What is the function of leucocytes?
To remove dead or injured cells and invading micro organisms
What is the function of thrombocytes?
helps form clots
What makes the RBC suitable for oxygen transport?
- no nucleus means more room for haemoglobin
- biconcave disks means increases SA
What makes the WBC suitable for their use?
nucleus- as they need to identify like cells
