Components of the Respiratory System Flashcards
Larynx
short tubular structure- reinforced with cartilage, contains vocal chords
Pharynx
Muscular tubular structure- carries air from nasal cavity to larynx
Trachea
supported by cartilage rings, filter and carries air to lungs
Lungs
provides the large SA for gas exchange
Bronchi
filter and carry air to bronchi
Bronchioles
carry air from bronchi to alveioli
alveioli
air sac, transports gas between internal and external enviroment
pleral membrane
adheres the lungs to ribs to assist in inhalation and exhalation
Diaphragm
contracts or relaxes changing volume of lungs
intercostal muscels
contract to change volume of lungs
Epiglottis
closes off trachea when swolling so no food enter lungs
rib
form framework of thoracic cavity- increase volume
