Muscular System Flashcards
Which muscles are il voluntary
Smooth and cardiac
What does it mean by antagonistic pair
One muscle contracts to move a bone, another contracts to return it to its position.
Define agonist
Prime mover
Define antagonist
Relaxed muscle
Define insertion
Moving joint
Define origin
Non moving joint
Define synergistic muscle
Or fixator, stabilise joint
Explain the muscle structure
- Constructed of muscle fibres
- each muscle fibre composed of many myofibril
- myofibril made up of contractile units called sarcomeres, which run adjacent to one another down myofibril
- sarcomeres composed of alternating protein filaments called actin and myosin
What are sarcomeres in relation to size and muscle
Smallest unit of skeletal muscle that can contract
What gives muscle the striated appearance
Alternating filaments
Which filiaments are thick and thin
Actin= thin, myosin = thick
Explain the sliding filament theory
- the sliding action between two filaments causing shortening and contraction
- the myosin has projections that hook, onto the actin
- when triggered, the projections attach, detach and reattach to a new spot on the actin as it pulls it along side it.
- results in sliding action, shortening, and eventual contraction.
Name the three types of muscles
Cardiac, striated., smooth
