The heart Flashcards
What does the cardiovascular system consist of?
Blood, heart and blood vessels
What is roughly the size of your heart?
the size of your fist
where is your heart located?
Between lungs
Where is the base (top) of your heart?
2nd intercostal space
Where is the apex (buttom) of your heart?
left and downward
What do the apex and right ventricle rest on?
the diaphragm posteriorly
What is between the parietal and visceral layers of the
serous pericardium and what is there?
pericardial cavity- filled with pericardial fluid which reduces the friction between the two membranes.
What are the layers of the heart walls (superficial-deep)
Epicardium
Myocardium
Endocardium
What does the epicardium consist of
mesothelium and connective tissue
What is the myocardium composed of?
cardiac muscle
What does the endocardium consist of
endothelium and connective tissue.
How many atria and lower ventricles are there in the heart?
two for both.
What are the two vena cavas called?
Superior and inferior
Where does the vena cava drain to?
The right atria.
Where does the pulmonary artery go from and to?
from the right ventricle
to the lungs
What is the two sections are separated by a bicuspid (mitral) value?
The left atrium and left ventrical.
Where does the Aorta go from and to?
from the left ventricle
to the whole body
Where does the pulmonary vein go to and from?
to the left atrium
from the lungs
What’s on the surface of the heart?
auricles and sulci
What are the small pouches on the anterior surface of each atrium?
Auricles
What are the grooves that contain blood vessels and fat and separate the chambers
Sulci
Where does the right atrium receive blood from?
Superior and inferior vena cava and the coronary sinus.
What separates the right and left atria
Septum
What is an oval depression, which is the remnant of teh foramen ovale
Fossa ovalis
