Hip Flashcards
What are the three major parts of the hip?
Ilium Ischium Pubis
What does the pelvic girdle consist of?
Two hips bones and axial components
What does the round head of the femur articulate into?
The acetabulum (ball and socket)
Describe the articular capsule
Dense Strong extension of the acetabulum rim
Where does the head of the femur ligament extend to?
The transverse ligament
What is acetabular labrum?
Cartilage rim the enhances the depth of the acetabulum
What are the movements of the hip?
Flexion Hyperextension Extension Abduction Adduction Medial rotation Lateral rotation
What are the main muscles involved in hip adduction?
Magnus Brevis Longus Gracilis Pectineus
What is the function of the pectineus muscle?
Hip flexion Hip adduction
What is the function of the adductor brevis?
Adducts and flexes the thigh Medial and lateral rotation of the thigh
What is the function of the adductor longus
Adducts and flexes the thigh Laterally rotates the hip
What is the function of the adductor mangus?
If hip is flexed it helps extend the hip Inward rotation Thigh adduction If hip is extended it helps flex the hip
What is the function of the gracilis?
Flexes the knee Adducts the thigh Medially rotates the tibia on the femur
What muscles are used to flex the hip?
Rectus femoris Iliopsoas Sartorius Tensor fascia latae Adductors
What is the function of the Iliopsoas?
Flex the hip
What is the function of the rectus femoris
flexes the hip
What is the function of the sartorius
Flexes the hip Adducts laterally the hip Laterally rotates teh hips Flexes the knee (gum on shoe muscle)
What is the function of the tensor fascia latae?
Flexes the hip Medially rotates femur Abduction
What are the main muscles involved in hip abduction?
Gluteus medius Gluteus minimus Piriformis Sartorius Tensor fascia latae
What is the function of the piriformis?
Lateral rotation of the hip Helps abduct the hip if it is flexed
