What was the role of the National Convention
To create a constitution, serve as the ruling body of France
What was the first move of the National Convention, and why did they do this?
They established a republic because they distrusted the king
Who did the Girondins represent, and what did they believe?
They represented areas outside of France, and they leaned towards keeping the king alive.
Who did the Jacobins represent, and what did they believe?
They represented the radicals in Paris, and they believed in executing the king to ensure that he was not a rallying point for opponents of the republic.
What did the Mountains convince the Convention to do?
To pass a decree condemning Louis XVI to death
What occurred after Louis XVI was executed?
Many countries began to fight against France
Why was the Committee of Public Safety given broad powers?
Because France was being confronted with domestic uprising and external threats
Who was the Committee of Public Safety dominated by?
Maximilien Robespierre
The Committee of Public Safety adopted policies that became known as what?
The Reign of Terror
What did the Committee of Public Safety do?
They beheaded those who appeared to be threats and those who rebelled against the Convention. Revolutionary armies were also set up to bring rebellious cities under the control of the National Convention.
Who made up a majority of those killed in the Reign of Terror?
The Third Estate
What did the Law of 22 Prairial?
It gave Robespierre more power to arrest and execute enemies of the revolution
How did the National Convention react to Robespierre?
They feared him and executed him
What did the National Convention do once the Terror was over?
It restricted the power of the Committee of Public Safety, reopened churches, and created a constitution
What were the two legislative houses of the constitution, and what was the role of each?
The lower class, the Council of 500, drafted laws. The upper class, the Council of Elders, accepted or rejected proposed laws.
