What did the people of Christian humanism believe?
The ability of humans to use reason and improve themselves, the value of reading the classics to become more pious, reforms of the Church and society
What did Desiderius Erasmus believe?
Religion was the “philosophy of Christ.” He believed in the doing of good deeds instead of providing beliefs to be saved. He wanted reform in the Catholic Church.
Who was Martin Luther?
A monk and professor at University of Wittenberg, and he believed that people must perform good deeds and live good lives.
What were Martin Luther’s beliefs?
People stood no chance to an almighty God, and no indulgences would even gain salvation. People are saved not through their works but through faith in God.
What did Martin Luther believe was the reliable source?
The Bible
What were the problems of the Catholic priests?
They were too caught up in Italian politics and worldly interests and did not focus on the people’s spiritual needs. They used the Catholic Church only as a source of income and did not want to help people in their religious endeavors.

Because Martin Luther was upset by the selling of indulgences, what did he do?
He created the 95 Theses and presented it to church superiors
How did the Church react to Luther’s actions?
He was summoned to appear before the legislative assembly of the Holy Roman Empire and sent to the emperor, Charles V, who believed that he could change Luther’s ideas
What did the Edict of Worms do?
Luther was established as an outlaw and demanded to be captured and sent to the emperor. His works would be burned.
How did religious reform in Germany take place?
German rulers who supported Luther took control of Catholic churches and built state churches. Luther set up new religious services to replace the Catholic mass.
What was the first Protestant faith?
Lutheranism
What did the Peace of Augsburg do?
Allowed choice of religion, but German rulers determined the religion of his subjects
What was the effect of the Protestant Reformation?
There was a split between Catholic and Protestant, the church and state were separate, and the Thirty Years’ War
