The evaluation for dream analysis Flashcards
1
Q
Evaluation of dream analysis?
A
- A strength would be that Freud has a lot of research support for his therapy:
- Solms - PET scans when there were people that were dreaming - forebrain was active(id)other parts of the brain that are involved with logic are dominant - quiet(ego)
- Hopfield - used neural networks on computer in order to try and stimulate brain activity. Computer processed the overloading memory through condensation, supports freud’s therapy of turning the latent content into the manifest content
- We can use Freud’s interactions with his patients, which he based his theories on, use them to show the success rate of dream analysis

Q
The weaknesses of dream analysis?
A
- His therapy is open to interpretation, which results in several solutions where some may not even be correct as well as participants ignoring solutions that they “dont like” so they are biased
- His therapy is unscientific - he is talking to people with no support of the scientific data such as brain scans to help support the therapy. People can lie about what they could be thinking and he may then not know it
- His therapy could be considered as being unethical:
- time and the cost, psychoanalysis can take a long time and can lead to being more expensive, not available on the NHS so CBT may then be better, only accessible to those who have money , open to abuse: therapists come back making sure they only come back with the interest for money
- There might not be a good relationship between the therapist and the client, only option for a therapist is Freud. Participants may then feel uncomfortable
- only focuses on child memories and ignores other aspects of life - ignored stress - unadressed issues can then cause the client not to then recover
