Cognitive approach: Investigating internal mental proccesses Flashcards
What does the assumption suggest?
cognitive processes to make sense of the world around us - use senses to collect info from the outside world - this is then processed by our brain(internal mental process)
What are some examples of these processes?
attention , perception ,memory , language, problem solving
What do the processes work together to do?
help us to be able to understand the world - automatic processes
what could be an example used to be able to explain this?
when a friend asks you a question you will pay attention to what is being said, language processing to interpret the sounds, call on your memory to recall relevant info to formulate an answer
what do psychologists use to be able to study internal mental processes?
introspection - making internal thoughts external. e.g: saying it out loud - a participant describes how a task/stimulus makes them feel
what is the problem with the cognitive approach?
Thoughts are not able to be directly measured or observed
What is cognitive bias?
error within our thinking - sticking with one thing thing despite it being wrong - e.g: losing all the time will not neccesarily act as an icentive to stop gambling
what is an heuristic?
Technique we help us to make descisions more quickly. e.g: descision to have one more go on the fruit machines and keep going until it is achieved(winning)
What was the aim of his study?
To investigate the thought process of people who gambled regulary vs people who do not gamble regulary
What was the method of this study?
asked to think aloud whilst playing on the fruit machine - given instructions:
- say everything that goes through mind
- talk as constantly as possible, even if your ideas are clearly structured
- do not hestitate to use fragmented sentences if needed
- do not try to justify your thoughts
What were the findings of this investigation?
frequent gamblers used more irrational verbilisations. e.g: “I lost because i wasn’t concentrating” or “This machine likes me”
