How does Freud describe dreams?

A

royal road to our unconcious mind - unconcious way of fufilling wishes and desires - unnacceptable to be satisfied in the concious mind - allow wish fufillment in an acceptable form

A

content of dream expressed symbolically - uncover meaning symbols need to be decoded - understanding the symbolic nature of the dream - context of the dreamers life should be further considered

A

recall dream to therapist - what the dreamer remembers(the story of the dream) referred to as the manifest content

A

we use dreamwork to be able to understand the dream - this is when the latent content(meaning of dream) transfered to the manifest content

What is discplacement?

A

emotional significance of a dream object is seperated from the real object and it is attatched to a safer one. for example: seeing a snake within your dream could mean that you might be decieved

What is condensation?

A

lot’s of elements that make up the latent content(meaning) of the dream and they are reperesented within just one image/picture - therefore the information is then condensed

What is reperesentation?

A

the idea that an abstract thought is reperesented by a visual image - when describing our dreams we use words to be able to describe the images

what is symbolism?

A

significant features of a dream may be replaced by a symbol, for example: a sword reperesents a penis

what is secondary elaboration?

A

occurs by the unconcious by collecting all of the images within the dream and fitting them together in order to be able to make sense of the dream - gives it a logical story doing this further disguises the latent content
