Dream analysis Flashcards
How does Freud describe dreams?
royal road to our unconcious mind - unconcious way of fufilling wishes and desires - unnacceptable to be satisfied in the concious mind - allow wish fufillment in an acceptable form
What did Freud believe about the content?
content of dream expressed symbolically - uncover meaning symbols need to be decoded - understanding the symbolic nature of the dream - context of the dreamers life should be further considered
what is step 1 of dream analysis?
recall dream to therapist - what the dreamer remembers(the story of the dream) referred to as the manifest content
What is step 2 of dream analysis?
we use dreamwork to be able to understand the dream - this is when the latent content(meaning of dream) transfered to the manifest content
What is step 5 of the dream analysis?
The 5 main proccesses within the dreamwork
What is discplacement?
emotional significance of a dream object is seperated from the real object and it is attatched to a safer one. for example: seeing a snake within your dream could mean that you might be decieved
What is condensation?
lot’s of elements that make up the latent content(meaning) of the dream and they are reperesented within just one image/picture - therefore the information is then condensed
What is reperesentation?
the idea that an abstract thought is reperesented by a visual image - when describing our dreams we use words to be able to describe the images
what is symbolism?
significant features of a dream may be replaced by a symbol, for example: a sword reperesents a penis
what is secondary elaboration?
occurs by the unconcious by collecting all of the images within the dream and fitting them together in order to be able to make sense of the dream - gives it a logical story doing this further disguises the latent content
