Control of variables Flashcards
What is an extraneous variable?
any variable that you are not investigating that could potentially affect the outcome of your research study - leads to innacurate conclusions about the relationship between the independent and the dependent variable
what is a confounding variable?
factors other than independent variables that may cause a result. For example: someone might not have had much food
what is demand characteristics?
this is the “please you” and “screw you” affect
cues may communicate what is “expected” of them
participants actively seek cues on how they should behave
this may then further act as an confounding variable - the behaviour causes the results too confirm the researchers initial beliefs
what are investigator effects(researcher bias)
cues that encourage a certain behaviour in a participant
questions may lead a participant
investigators response to participant(smiling, encouragment)
