Aims and hypothesis Flashcards

1
Q

what is an aim?

A
  • an aim is a general idea
  • the aim is what the study is trying to find out

Q

what is a hypothesis?

A
  • comes after the aim
  • a prediction about the variables in the study
  • a hypothesis must state an outcome for research

Q

what is an alternative hypothesis?

A

the alternative to the null hypothesis, an example: people who have lot’s of sleep have better marks in class tests than people with a lower sleep average

Q

Directional hypothesis?

A

states the direction of the predicted difference between two condition or two groups of participants, for example: people who do homework without the TV on produce better results than those who do homework with the TV on

Q

What is a non directional hypothesis?

A

predicts simply that there is a difference between two conditions or two groups of participants, without stating the direction of the difference, for example: People who do homework with the TV on produce different results from those who do homework without the TV on

Q

What is the null hypothesis?

A

the assumption of no relationship between variables being studied, for example: there is no difference in the marks on class tests between people who sleep an average of 8 hours or more per night and those with a lower sleep average
