What did freud believe?
early childhood experiences shape our adult personality - psychological development occurs through the stage called pyschosexual stages
What are the pyschosexual stages?
oral, anal, phallic, latencey, genital
What does each stage reperesent?
the fixation of libido(the desire for sexual activity) on different areas of the body
When can occur during these stages?
frustration(stage not been resolved as the child in under satisfied) or overindulgence( this occurs when the needs of the child have been over-satisfied - too comfortable and reluctant to move onto the next stage)
Oral stage?
From birth to 1st year - Id gratification is focused on the mouth - it is the main “Erogenous zone” - much effort towards stimulation of the mouth
What are the fixations of the oral stage?
smoking, biting nails, sarcastic, critical
Anal stage?
This stage lasts 1-3 years
erogenous zone sphincter muscles of the anus urinary tract
key part of the stage is potty training - if child is frustrated they can become stubborn, possesive, overly tidy
overindulgence - messy,reckless, disorganised
Phallic stage?
3 to 6 years
genital region becomes the source of Id gratification
observed to handling there genitals
What fixations can occur at the phallic stage?
narcissistic, reckless, possibly homosexual
Latency stage?
occurs at 5 years to 12 years
little sexual motivation within this stage
Genital stage?
12+ years - sexual and romantic interests are directed to peers
libido is the genitals
difficulty forming heterosexual relationships if not resolved
