The Emergence Of Cognitive Neuroscience Flashcards
cognitive neuroscience is
the scientific study of biological structures that underpin cognitive processes
merging of 2 approaches
biological + cognitive
uses assumptions of cognitive approach and biological RM eg. brain scans
cognitive neuroscientists study:
brain activity underlying memory, attention, perception and awareness via brain scans eg. fMRI, EEG
they are also interested in impairments in these regions which characterise different psychological conditions
example of neuroscience use for studying cognitive processes
in brain scans, it has veen possible to work out which parts of the brain are involved in the processing of words.
why is cog neuroscience becoming the dominant paradigm in modern psychology?
due to the use of scanning techniques eg. fMRI and PET
strength
uses very scientific research methods
uses brain scans eg. PET and fMRI to study the biological basis of cognitive processes. eg. they studied brain activity levels in those with/without depression
these methods have high control over EVs and can establish C+E relationship eg. low activity level may cause depression
strength - useful
cognitive neuroscience has been useful
by using brain scans to understand the biological basis of cog processes, it has led to development of treatments eg. better understanding of memory can lead to treatment for those with memory problems
better quality of life
