Correct rules of conduct when carrying out research.
Ethical issues
When a conflict arises between the rights of participants and goals of research to produce valid data and findings
The British psychological society
Set up a code of ethics
Researchers have to follow them or they could lose their job or even go to prison
BPS guidelines only apply to UK
State what behaviour is acceptable when dealing with participants
5 main ethical issues
Informed consent

Right to withdraw
Protection from harm
Privacy and confidentiality

Making participants aware of aims of the research, the procedure and their rights
Could cause demand characteristics
Deception
Deliberately misleading / withholding info
May be justified if you can’t do experiment any other way and it doesn’t cause distress
Right to withdraw
A participant must be able to leave experiment at any time
They must be aware of this
Protection from harm
Ps should not be placed in any more risk than they would be in their daily lives
Privacy and confidentiality
Right to control info about themselves
Debrief letter should include
