RM Correlation Flashcards
Correlation is
A statistical technique for analysing data, when there are 2 sets of numerical scores for a participant
Main aim is to assess whether there is a relationship between 2 co variables
Positive correlation
Both variables move in same direction
Negative correlation
When one variable increases and the other decreases
Zero correlation
The researchers find no relationship between the 2 variables
Correlation coefficients
Numerical measure of strength and direction of the relationship between 2 co variables
Perfect negative coefficient: -1
Perfect positive: +1
No correlation: 0
Strengths of correlation
Can be used for initial testing to see whether a relationship exists before spending time/money on full scale study
If no relationship is found it might suggest that a full scale study is not worth investigating
Limitations of correlation
Researcher has little control over EVs
Cause + effect can’t be established. You don’t have IV / DV
Hypothesis for a correlation
Non directional - there will be a relationship
Null- there will be no relationship
Experiment compared to correlation
Experiment has IV and DV correlation doesn’t
Experiment established cause + effect correlation doesn’t
Experiment is a more scientific research method but correlation is a statistical technique
In experiment researcher has more control over EVs
Experimental hypothesis - difference but correlation hypothesis is relationship
