The Digestive Systems Flashcards
What is the function of the liver in digestion
Produces bile which neutralises hydrochloric acid from the stomach and emulsifies fat to form small droplets with a large surface area
What is the function of saliva in digestion
Lubrication to help swallowing - contains amylase to break down starch
Name three enzymes produced in the pancreas
Amylase protest and lipase
What is the function of the mouth
Where food is chewed
What is the salivary glands
Makes saliva containing the enzyme amylase
What is the function of the oesophagus
Carries food to the stomach
What does the stomach do (3p)
- churns food
- releases protest -digests proteins
- releases hydrochloric acid - kills pathogens
What does the rectum do
Stores faeces
What does the anus do
Expel faeces
What does the large intestine do
It’s where water and minerals are absorbed into blood
What does the small intestine do
Where digested food is absorbed into the blood
What does the gall bladder store
It stores bile
What is the pancreas
makes enzymes amylase, lipase and protease
What is the role of amylase
Digest starch into smaller molecules ultimately yielding maltose
Which in turn is cleaved into two glucose molecules by maltose
What is protease
Enzymes that are responsible for breaking down proteins in our food into amino acids
What is lipase
An enzyme the body uses to break down fats in food so they can be absorbed in the intestines
