Circulatory System - Blood Flashcards
What do red blood cells do
Transport oxygen from the lungs to the body cells
Adaptations of the red blood cell
- has no nucleus means they have more room for the haemoglobin
- they are a bioconcave disc shape giving the red blood cells a greater surface area so oxygen diffuses in and out rapidly
What does white blood cells having an nucleus encode
The instructions that the white blood cells need to do their jobs
What is the use for donated blood
- Replace blood lost during injury
- some people are given platelets extracted from blood to help in clotting
- proteins extracted from blood can also be useful for things like antibodies
Disadvantage of donation blood
- must be same blood as patient or else will be rejected by immune system
- lots of diseases can be transmitted via blood
What shape is a red blood cell
Bioncave disc
What does the shape of the red cell help with
Gives it a large surface area for absorbing oxygen
What is phagocytosis
Fighting of microorganisms
Do white blood cells have a nucleus
Yes
Do platelets have a nucleus
No
Is blood a tissue or a cell
Tissue
What does plasma do
Carries everything in blood
What things does plasma carry
Proteins
Hormones
Urea
Antibodies
Antitoxins
Co2
Red white blood cells
Platelets
Nitrates eg glucose and amino acids
What can lack of platelets cause
Excessive bleeding and bruising
