Required Practical Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is this practical investigating
The affects the rate of photosynthesis using aquatic plants
What is the aim of this practical
To measure the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis by observing the amount of oxygen product
Equipment list for photosynthesis test
- aquatic plant
- beaker or test tube
- lamp
- ruler
- water(with sodium bicarbonate)
- stopwatch
- funnel and test tube
Why do we put sodium bicarbonate in the water
To provide co2
First thing you do setting up apparatus
Place the aquatic plant in a beaker filled with water. Add a small amount of sodium bicarbonate to increase co2 availability
Second step of setting up apparatus
Position lamp at a fixed distance from the lamp
3rd thing we do (photosynthesis practical)
Allow the plant to adapt to the light for a few minutes
4th thing we do (photosynthesis practical)
Convert the number of o2 bubbles released from the cut stem of the plant in 1 min
Alternatively collect the gas in a test tube and measure the volume
What do we repeat (photo pract)
Different light intensities
5th thing we do (photo prac)
Move the lamp to different distance
6th thing you do (photo pract)
Record the number of bubbles(or volume of gas) for each distance
What are the control variables of the photosynthesis practical
CO2 concentration
Water temp
Time constant
What should the results be like for phot pract
The closer the light source the higher the light intensity and faster rate of photosynthesis (more bubbles/oxygen)
What do you do with data found from photosynthesis practical
A graph of light intensity vs rate of photosynthesis can be plotted
What is the conclusion of the photosynthesis practical
Photosynthesis rate increases with light intensity due to more energy being available for the reaction
At a certain point the rate plateaus showing the effect of other limiting factors
