Biotic & Abiotic Flashcards
Some biotic factors that affect a community
The availability of food
New predation
Competition between species
New pathogens
How can the availability of food affect a community
If the availability of food falls the number of organism in that community will also fall
All animals eat…
Other living organisms
How can a new predator affect a community
Can cause population of a prey species to fall . A new predator can also affect existing predators
How can competition between species affect communities
If a species is outnumbered then the population can fall so much that the numbers are no longer sufficient to breed and these species may become extinct
How can new pathogens affect a community
If an update infectious disease emerges and spreads it can wipe out the population of a species
Some abiotic factors that can affect a community
Light intensity
Temperature
Water
Ph and mineral content in soil
Wind intensity and direction
CO2 and o2
How can light intensity affect a community
Big effect on plants. If it’s too low then rate of photosynthesis falls and grow slower and if plants grow slowly then animals which eat plants might no have enough food
How can temperature affect communities
If the temp changes in environment then the distribution of species will change
How can water affect communities
Both plants and animals meet it to survive . If less water then less organism and vise versa
How can ph and mineral content of soil affect a community
Plants can’t grow which is too acidic or too alkali
Plants also need certain minerals in soil
How does wind intensity and direction affect communities
Strong winds blowing inland from sea can cause plans let’s to lose water
How can co2and o2 affect communities
CO2 plants need for photosynthesis and if co2 levels fall then the rate of photosynthesis will also fall
Oxygen is needed for aerobic respiration. The levels in the air stay fairly constant . However levels in dissolved oxygen in water can fall being harmful to aquatic organisms
