The Digestive System Flashcards
Position wise: how is the belly’s organs placed?
Liver on top left, stomach in middle, gall bladder is tiny under the liver in the left, and pancreas is at the bottom
what are those things at the back of our mouth? Function
salivary glands; produce amylase
whats that thing running through the large intestine? Function
colon; absorbs water into blood
Whats the thing at the end of the large intestine, but before the anus? Function
rectum ; store faeces
Whats the tube from the throat called? Function
oesophagus ; carries food to stomach
Function of mouth
take in food and chew it
function of liver
produce liquid bile to help digest fat, sends it to gall bladder
regulate amount of each food in the blood
function of stomach
churn food, adding hydrochloric acid to it. Now called chyme
gall bladder function
store bile
pancreas function
produce enzymes to break down nutrients
anus function
allow faces to pass out of body
system definition
A group of organs working together
digestion definition
The breaking down of larger food particles into smaller food particles
Why is the digestive system necessary?
Blood needs nutrients to carry around the body to different organs; large food particles cannot be absorbed by blood, therefore digestion
what are the 5 steps of digestion
ingestion , digestion, absorption, assimilation (food is used by the body) egestion
what are four groups of teeth and their functions
Incisors- cut and slice food
canines- grip and tear food
premolars and molars - chew and grind food
enzyme definition
a chemical found in living organisms that speed up chemical reactions
amylase function
an enzyme; breaks down starch to sugar maltose
substrate definition
the name of the substance on which an enzyme acts eg starch
product definition
the name of the substance that is formed when an enzyme reacts with a substrate
experiment to investigate the digestion of starch by amylase?
two test tubes in a bath of 37C water, the control with starch and water and the test with starch and amylase.left for 5 mins. put a sample from each tube onto a spotting plate and test with iodine.
function of bile duct in the gall bladder?
sends bile to the small intestine
how does the digestive and circulatory system interact?
a large blood supply to the organs of the digestive system to absorb nutrients into food
