Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Filtration
A method of separating an insoluble solid fe a liquid, using a material that allows the liquid to pass through but not the solid
Filtrate
The liquid that had been filtered (pure)
Residue
The part that has not been filtered
Filtration experiment
Retort stand, filter paper, funnel, beaker, sand and water, glass rod to prevent splashing
Evaporation
The changing of a liquid to a gas at the surface of a liquid
Experiment evaporation
Sodium chloride in water
Heated in evaporating basin
Water turn to steam, sodium chloride is left behind
Experiment separation salt from rock salt
Heat rock salt and water solution - salt will dissolve but sand will not
Filter solution to get salt and water
Evaporate to get salt
Distillation
The vaporising of a liquid by boiling it and then condensing the vapor by cooling it
Distillate
The purified liquid produced by condensation from a vapor during distillation
Experiment distillation seawater
Liebig condenser like an extra layer over the tube
Water out on left side, water in on right side (water used to keep the Liebig condenser cool)
Paper Chromatography
A method of separating mixtures of substances in solution. the solvent in which the substances are dissolved is passed along a length of paper and the dissolved substances separate out on the paper
Chromatography experiment
A spot of ink from a marker is placed on paper, draw a line to indicate the position with pencil.
A suitable solvent is let to soak through paper
-the spot of ink is placed just above the level of the solvent
-the mixture of inks used to make the ink in the market will separate out into various colors
Chromatogram
The strip of paper on which the parts of a mixture have been separated by chromatography
