Energy Flashcards
define energy
the ability to do work
Energy and work are measured in Joules (J)
give 8 types of energy
kinetic, potential, chemical, nuclear, sound, light, electrical, heat
explain kinetic energy
due to movement eg water flowing in a river
explain potential energy
due to position (height) or tension (spring) eg water in a dam
explain chemical energy
stored in chemicals, fuels or food, released during a chemical reaction eg coal, oil, batteries
explain nuclear energy
stored in the nucleus of an atom eg nuclear power plant
explain sound energy
due to the vibration of an object eg loudspeaker
explain light energy
from the sun, heats the earth
explain how heat energy is used
used to generate electricity in a power station
The Principle of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another
define non-renewable energy source
one that will not be regenerated in our lifetime
give three examples of fossil fuels, an advantage and disadvantage
coal, oil, gas
easy to store, transport
cause global warming by co2 emissions
give an example of nuclear fuels and an advantage and disadvantage
uranium
doesn’t emit co2
nuclear accidents contaminate environment
define renewable energy source
never be used up
give six examples of renewable energy sources
hydroelectric, biomass, wave, tidal, geothermal, wind, solar
