What do the salivary glands do?
Produce amylase enzyme in the saliva.
What is the gullet?
The oesophagus, where food travels to get to the stomach.
What does the stomach do?
Pummels food with the muscular walls, produces the protease enzyme pepsin and produces hydrochloric acid for two reasons:
1) to kill bacteria
2) to give the right pH for protease
What does the liver do?
Produces bile for neutralisation and emulsifying fats.
What does the gall bladder do?
Stores bile to be released into the small intestine.
What does the pancreas do?
Produces protease, lipase and amylase enzymes to be released into the small intestine.
What does the large intestine do?
Where excess water is absorbed from food.
What does the small intestine do?
Produces protease, lipase and amylase enzymes for digestion, absorbs digested food into the blood.
What is the rectum?
Where faeces is stored before being released.
