Enzymes and Digestion Flashcards
What do digestive enzymes do?
Break big molecules into smaller ones.
What are three big molecules?
Starch, proteins and fats.
What are four small molecules?
Sugars, amino acids, glycerol and fatty acids.
What does amylase do and where it is made (3 places)?
Breaks down starch into sugars, it is made in the small intestine, pancreas and the salivary glands.
What does protease do and where is it made (3 places)?
Breaks down proteins into amino acids, it is made in the small intestine, pancreas and the stomach.
What does lipase do and where is it made (2 places)?
Converts lipids into glycerol and fatty acids, it is made in the small intestine and pancreas.
What does bile do, where is it produced and where is it stored?
Bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats so there is a bigger surface area to increase the rate of reaction. It is produced in the pancreas but is stored in the gall bladder, and is then released into the small intestine.
