The Creation Narrative Flashcards
- Know what the story tells us about God and creation - The cultural mandate (and it's possible redefining by Jesus) - Know what happens on each day of creation - know the differences between the family lines of Seth and Cain
What happens on each day of creation?
Day 1: God creates the heavens and the Earth (currently just a ball of water. It’s hard to say if he was referring heaven as literal heaven, or if he just meant ‘everything beyond Earth’
Day 2: God made the atmosphere
Day 3: God made dry land, and plant life
Day 4: God made the spatial objects, like the sun moon, and other stars
Day 5: God creates all creatures that live in water (also birds and bugs)
Day 6: God creates all creatures that live on dry land, including Adam and Eve, in the image of God, and places them above all else. This is also where the cultural mandate is presented
Day 7: God rested, so he could establish a day of rest for the humans to follow, and because what he made was already perfect. He was finished
What is the cultural mandate? What does it mean and represent? What is the updated version of it?
The cultural mandate is the earliest form of a goal set for humanity by God, and it was our original purpose. It said that we should be fruitful/increase in number, fill the Earth, subdue it, and rule over it. Something that could be seen as an updated version of it is the ‘Great Commission’, which was an objective given to all humans by the resurrected Jesus. It says to make disciples of God in all nations, no matter the background of the person
How is God revealed in creation?
Creation tells us that God is the ultimate creator, and is able to make a wide range of beautiful, weird, and dangerous things. It also says that he is the initiator, mediator, and enabler of all things
What is the difference between the lines of Seth and Cain?
Even though they both derive from Adam, the lines of Seth and Cain are both different. The Sethites and Cainites were the 2 big people groups of the pre-flood era. The Sethites were largely more godly than the Cainites, since they followed him more closely and were ultimately the ones to carry out his eventual plan for humanity (flood). The Sethites are the only line to survive after the flood, since Noah was a Sethite, and everyone else was sinful beyond correction
