Q

What was the main ‘theme’ of Judges?

A

The main ‘theme’ of this book was to show that God cared for his people, and wanted the best for them, even if it meant he had to use bad people to do what needed to be done. ‘In those days, there was no king’ rings throughout the end of the book, showing that a true, God-ordained king was soon to come, and he would be better than all the judges

Q

What did Ehud, the judge, do?

A

The second judge, and a pretty good one. Killed Eglon, the king of the Moabites on a secret mission. Eglon was the one that swallowed up that dagger that he was killed by because he was so obese

Q

What did Deborah, the judge, do?

A

The third, and only female judge, and a pretty good one. She killed Jabin, the king of Hazor, who was acting outwardly degrading towards Israel. This restored some godliness and patriotism to her people

Q

What did Gideon, the judge, do?

A

The fourth judge, and one with good intentions, even though he wasn’t the brightest. He was called by God to end the pillaging of Israel by the Midianites. He accidentally reintroduced idols to Israel, and he escaped before he became one himself

Q

What did Abimelech, the judge, do?

A

The fifth judge, and son of the fourth, Gideon. He had very little integrity, and used other people as ‘stepping stones’ to get what he wanted. He killed all but one of his brothers, and persuaded the Shechemites to make him king of Shechem. He was killed when a woman threw a rock at his head, fatally wounding him, so he made one of his men kill him, to have it not be known that he was killed by a woman (that didn’t work out so well in retrospect)

Q

What did Jephthah, the judge, do?

A

The sixth judge. He was a mighty warrior, but not a godly man. He fended off the Amorites, who were very oppressive against the Israelites at the time. He didn’t know much about God, and thought he was like a Canaanite false god, so he tried to sacrifice his daughter to him (based on a promise he didn’t have to make to him)

Q

What did Samson, the judge, do?

A

The seventh, most famous, and worst judge of them all. He was a ferocious fighter and warrior. He killed a lion with his bare hands, killed a thousand of his Philistine captors with a donkey’s jaw-bone, got a haircut which took away his strength, and ended his life in a fit of rage and massacre
