the circulatory system Flashcards
what is plasma
liquid portion of the blood, allows red blood cells to flow and contains antibodies
what is the function of red blood cells
they carry oxygen to muscles, haemoglobin attaches to oxygen
what is the function of white blood cells
they fight infection disease and pathogens
what is the function of platelets and where are they made
they are made in bone marrow and help blood clot
what do capillaries do?
they supply cells with nutrients and take away waste products
what does the aorta vena cava pulmonary vein pulmonary artery do?
aorta- takes oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body
vena cava- brings deoxygenated blood from the body into the heart
pulmonary vein- carries oxygenated blood from the lungs into the heart
pulmonary artery- takes deoxygenated blood from the heart into the lungs
what are the 3 functions of the cardiovascular system expand
- transport, carries oxygen and nutrients as well as waste products like CO2 and lactic acid
- clotting, platelets form blood clots which seal wounds quickly, important to fight infection and excessive bleeding
- temperature regulation, blood vessels carry out vasodilation and vasoconstriction to keep temperature at 37 degrees
what are 4 factors that affect heart rate
- fitness
- age
- diet
- lifestyle
- body tupe
- stress levels
what is a fitter person’s resting ,working, and time taken to return to resting in comparison to someone whos unfit
resting work rate is lower because their heart is more efficient and so is the working heart rate. they recover faster and return to resting heart rate quicker because they have a more efficient cardiovascular system
what is cardiac output and whats the formula
the amount of blood ejected from the heart per minute
heart rate x stroke volume
what is stroke volume
amount of blood pumped per beat
