The Cerebrum Flashcards
Where is gray matter in the cerebrum?
In cerebral cortex and basal nuclei
Where is white matter in the cerebrum?
Deep to basal cortex, around basal nuclei
What are the three divisions of the cerebrum? (sulci)
- The central sulcus
- The lateral sulcus
- The parieto-occipital sulcus
What divides the parietal lobe from the occipital lobe?
The parieto-occipital sulcus
What divides the frontal lobe from the temporal lobe?
The lateral sulcus
What divides the anterior frontal lobe from the posterior parietal lobe?
The central sulcus
What sulcus divides the motor and sensory areas?
The central sulcus
What part of the cerebrum directs voluntary movements?
The pre-central gyrus of the frontal lobe
What part of the cerebrum makes up the surface of the precentral gyrus?
The primary motor cortex
What are the neurons of primary motor cortex?
Pyramidal cells
Which gyrus recieves somatic sensory info (touch, pressure, pain, vibration, etc)
Postcentral gyrus of the parietal lobe
What part of the cerebrum makes up the surface of the postcentral gyrus?
Primary sensory cortex
What part of the cerebrum processes information from sight receptors?
Visual Cortex
What part of the cerebrum processes information from sound receptors?
Auditory Cortex
What part of the cerebrum processes information from odor receptors?
Olfactory Cortex
What part of the cerebrum processes information from taste receptors?
Gustatory Cortex
What is a sensory association area?
Monitors and interprets arriving information at sensory areas of cortex
What is the function of the SOMATIC sensory association area
Interprets input to primary sensory cortex (recognizes touch)
What is the function of the somatic Motor association area?
(Premotor cortex) Coordinates motor responses / learned movements
What is the Wernicke’s area?
The “general interpretive area”, 1 hemisphere, collects info from all sensory association areas, coordinates access to complex visual and auditory memories
Where is the “speech center’ located? What does it do?
In the general interpretive area, coordinates vocals
What part of the general interpretive area performs abstract intellectual activities? (predictions, etc)
The pre-frontal cortex
What is a cerebrovascular disease?
A disorder that interferes with blood circulation to the brain
What are the effects of a stroke or cerebrovascular accident?
Shuts off blood to a portion of the brain causing neurons to die.
What condition causes damage to motor control areas of the brain with birth causing paralysis of one or more limbs?
Cerebral Palsy
Which hemisphere controls reading, writing, math, decision making, speech and language?
Left brain
Which hemisphere controls senses and recognition?
Right brain
Which lobe houses the visual cortex?
The occipital lobe
Which lobe houses the auditory cortex?
The temporal lobe
Which lobe houses the olfactory cortex?
The temporal lobe
Which lobe houses the primary sensory cortex?
The parietal lobe
Which lobe houses the primary motor cortex?
The frontal lobe
