Muscles of the Lower Limbs Flashcards
What are the 3 groups of muscles of the lower limbs?
- Muscles that move the thigh
- Muscles that move the leg
- Muscles that move the foot + toes
What muscles make up the glutes?
- Gluteus Maxmimus
- Gluteus Medius + Minimus
- Tensor fasciae latae (tendon)
What is the function of the Gluteus Maximus?
Extension and lateral rotation at hip
What is the function of the Tensor fasciae latae?
- Assists Gluteus Maximus
2. Stabilizes iliotibial tract (IT band)
Where do the Gluteus Medius + Minimus originate and insert?
Originate: anterior to gluteus maximus
Insert: on trochanter
What 4 muscle groups move the thigh?
- Gluteal Muscles
- Lateral Rotators
- Adductors
- Iliopsoas
How many muscles make up Lateral Rotators and what are the two most dominant muscles?
- However, the pisiformis and obturator are the dominant muscles.
What is the function of the Pisiformis?
Lateral rotation and abduction at hup
What is the function of the Obturators?
(externus and internus) Lateral rotation of the hip
How many adductors are they? How many can you name?
6.
Adductor Magnus, Adductor brevis, Adductor longus, Pectineus, Gracilis, Iliopsoas
What is the function of the Adductor Magnus?
Adducts, extension + flexion
What is the special about the Iliopsoas?
It is made of two hip flexors that insert on the same tendon. Those flexors are Psoas Major + Iliacus
What 2 muscle groups are used to move the leg? Where do they originate + insert?
- Flexors of the knee originate in the pelvic girdle
2. Extensors of the knee originate on the femur, insert on the patella
What are the flexors of the knee?
- Hamstring group
2. Sartorius
How many muscles are in the hamstring group? How many can you name?
3.
Biceps femoris, Semimebnranosus, semitendinosus
