Intro Vocabulary Flashcards
What is Anatomy?
The science that describes or investigates the FORM and STRUCTURE of an ORGANISM, or the science that examines the relationship between the STRUCTURE of the BODY parts and its function
Developmental Anatomy
The study of structural changes that occur between Conception and Adulthood.
Gross Anatomy
The study of the structure of the body without a microscope
Surface Anatomy
Study of external form of the body and its relation to deeper structure
What is Physiology?
The brand of biological science that studies the Functions of living organism and its parts
Cell Physiology
Examines the PROCESSES occurring in cell
Caridovascular Physiology
Associates with the PROCESSES of heart and blood vessels
Neurophysiology
Focuses on the nervous system
Systemic Physiology
Looks on the functions of the organ system
Who generally examines the body?
Anatomists
Who generally experiments on the body?
Physiologists
What are the 6 Characteristics of life?
Organization, Metabolism, Responsiveness, Growth, Development, and Reproduction
What is Organization?
The condition in which the parts of an organism have specific relationships to each other and the parts interact to perform specific functions
What is Metabolism?
The sum of chemical changes occurring in an organism, necessary for vital functions such as responsiveness, growth, development and reproduction.
What is Anabolism?
A metabolic processes in which reactions convert Small Molecules into Large Molecules
What is Catabolism?
A metabolic process in which Large molecules are converted to Small Molecules
What is Responsiveness?
The ability for an organism to sense changes in its external or internal environment and adjusts to those changes
What is Growth?
When cells increase in size or number, which produce an overall enlargement of all or part of an organism.
What is Development?
Changes an organism undergoes through time. It begins with fertilization and ends with death.
What is Reproduction?
A process by which organisms produce offspring, thus passing their genes onto their offspring.
