Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Where is simple squamous epithelium located?
Kidney, air sacs of lungs (alveolar), lining of heart, blood vessels, lining of ventral body cavity
What is the function of simple squamous epithelium?
Allows materials to pass by diffusion and filtration in sites where protections is not important. secretes lubricating substances.
Where is simple cuboidal epithelium located?
Kidney tubules, ducts and secretory portions of small glands, ovary surface
What is the function of simple cuboidal epithelium?
Secretion and absorption
Where is simple columnar epithelium located?
Nonciliated: digestive tract, gallbladder, exretory ducts of some glands. Ciliated: small bronchi, uterine tubes, some regions of the uterus.
What is the function of simple columnar epithelium?
Absorption, secretions of mucus + enzymes, etc. ciliated type propels mucus or reproductive cells by ciliary action.
Where is pseudostratified columnar epithelium located?
Nonciliated type: in male’s sperm carrying ducts and cuts of large glands Ciliated: lines the trachea, most of the upper respiratory tract
What is the function of pseudostratified columnar epithelium?
Secretes substances, particularly mucus, propulsion of mucus by ciliated action
Where is stratified squamous epithelium located?
Non-keratinized: moist linings of the mouth, esophagus, and vagina Keratinized: forms the dry epidermis of the skin
What is the function of stratified squamous epithelium?
Protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion.
Where is stratified cuboidal epithelium located?
Largest ducts of sweat glands, mammary glands and salivary glands.
What is the function of cuboidal epithelium?
Protection.
Where is stratified columnar epithelium located?
Rare. small amounts in male urethra and in large cuts of some glands.
What is the function of stratified columnar epithelium?
Protection and secretion.
Where is transitional epithelium located?
Lines the ureters, urinary bladder, and part of the urethra.
