the central nervous system Flashcards
gross anatomy of spinal cord
- gray matter:
- differentiated into anterior and posterior horns - white matter:
- forms ascending and descending spinal tracts
- consists of sensory and motor fibers - central canal:
- leads to 4th ventricle of brain
spinal nerves
- pass through intervertebral foramen
- 31 pairs
- dorsal root=sensory nerve entry point
- dorsal root ganglion=sensory nerve cell bodies
- ventral root= motor nerve exit point
plexus
-a merging network of spinal nerve trunks leading to and from a specific bodily area.
cervical plexus
head, neck, upper chest, and back
brachial plexus
shoulder, arm, and hand
lumbar plexus
lower back, abdomen, genitalia, thigh
sacral plexus:
buttocks, posterior thigh, calf, foot
meninges
protective membrane covering brain and spinal cord
Dura mater
-dense irregular connective tissue surrounded externally by blood vessels and fat
arachnoid membrane
- squamous epithelium and elastic connective tissue.
- encloses subarachnoid space
pia mater
- vascular areolar membrane supporting blood vessels
- closely adherent to the spinal cord and brain
ascending tract—dorsal (crossover at medulla):
- fasciculus gracilis; light touch and muscle position
- sense in lower body - fasciculus cuneatus; light touch and muscle position
- sense in upper body - spinocerebellar: subconscious muscle sense to the cerebellum—> posture control
ascending tract—lateral (crossover at level of entry):
-spinothalamic; pain and temperature
ascending tract—anterior(crossover at level of entry):
-spinothalamic; crude touch and pressure
descending tracts—motor pathways from the cerebral cortex and/or the cerebellum:
- pyramidal (crossover at medulla forming pyramids):
- corticospinal; fine voluntary movement - extrapyramidal(crossover above medulla):
- involuntary influence on coordination and balance
